Carol Quinn | Fine Art

Carol Quinn Fine Art

Carol’s love of art has been present from early childhood and one of her earliest memories is from kindergarten while standing in front of a large easel, pots of paint and paper awaiting her touch.” It was and still is an exciting feeling to begin another painting”, she says. Her kindergarten report card states “we have tried to interest Carol in numbers but she would rather paint” which is still true today.

Throughout her school years and into college she continued to pursue art, a passion that never waned. Carol secured her first gallery representation in her early 20’s with Gallery Fair in Mendocino, California. She did many paintings of the local landscape and coast that were well received. With marriage and family responsibilities she had to take a hiatus until 2004. After that Carol immersed herself into her art and studied with such notable artists as Anita Wolfe, Kathleen Dunphy, Mike Bagdonas, Craig Nelson, and Ned Mueller. “Each of these artists has challenged me to take my art to the next level”, she says. Her passion is the California landscape especially the Sierra, Gold Country and coast which she interprets in vibrant color and dramatic light and shadows in an impressionistic style. Carol likes to paint scenes that reflect not only the rich heritage of California’s incredible and varied landscapes but to take the viewer there as well. Most of all her paintings are a gift to the viewer inviting them to an oasis of calm and awe-inspiring nature.

Carol has shown her work in many local galleries in Sacramento and Folsom as well as periodic shows in Intel. She has served as a board member of the Folsom Art Association for over 10 years.  Most recently her painting, “After the Rain” won Best In Show at the Folsom Art Association’s Member Show in the Bank of America Gallery at the Harris Center in Folsom.

Her art is represented by the Gold Country Artist’s Gallery in Placerville, California, www.goldcountryartistsgallery.net

Nevada City Film Festival | Art & Entertainment in the Sierra

Wild & Scenic Film Festival

Nevada City Wild & Scenic Film Festival

January 14th to the 24th, 2021

The Annual Nevada City Film Festival returns as an entirely virtual experience over eleven days. Over 100 films are handpicked for their artistry and audience appeal. The festival organizers look at approximately 100 other films from other festivals, distributors, film schools, and those they hear about through industry word of mouth.

"We look at the films first and foremost for excellence in storytelling. That's always been our major priority," said Jesse Locks, the festival director. Locks is guided by the idea that film is an art that brings people together — allowing them to talk about issues they may not be able to speak of; the idea that it's art somehow makes it easier.

FILM BRINGS THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER

Locks says that films that connect with their audience are an important part of their programming. The festival schedule offers an eclectic and wide array of films, selected to appeal to local filmmakers — from children's animated shorts and local angles to documentaries and full-length features with household names.

While the festival has always featured serious subject matter, this year, they tend to be many coming of age stories and films about social responsibilities.

Craig Martinez Sculptures

Craig Martinez

"My work often has a Native American nuance, but not all pieces can be categorized as such conscious or unconsciously".

Craig Martinez's work tends toward eternal archetypes and he is interested in the human as a spiritual being burdened with reflective thought. The cuts, scratches, and scars on his sculptures are conceptual and literal evidence of being alive. Jungian psychology, William Blake poetry, Catholicism and a lifelong battle with depression are also part of his creative process. His worldview is based on a fundamental belief in redemption.

National Hotel | An historic hotel in Jamestown, California

The National Hotel
One of the finest and oldest hotels in California

What sets this historic hotel apart from other hotels in the area is its original 1849 deco. When you stay at the National Hotel, it's a true step back in time.

The National Hotel was established in 1859 by to pioneers Heinrich and Hannah Neilson. This hotel was established in Jamestown, California. It was one of the first hotels with a bar and restaurant.

Later, it was to become known as the National Hotel. This wooden building was among the first permanent structures in this early (1848) gold-rush era. Early establishments in the gold fields were mostly tent and non-permanent structures. The National Hotel was one of the first original buildings in Jamestown and has been in continuous operation from this date.

Over the years, the National Hotel has been updated and remodeled. The present owner works hard to preserve the original look and feel of the hotel.

For example, the original back bar is still utilized today with a working cash register dating to 1881 and is in view, although it is handicapped by the fact that a maximum of $6.95 can be wrung at any one time. Much of the wood wainscoting which is visible throughout the building is original and can still be seen. Plumbing has been added to each individual room of the hotel.

There are 9 unique guest rooms that are beautifully appointed with fine antiques. Each room has air conditioning and a private bath with hair dryer, pull chain toilets, tile showers, and fluffy bathrobes.  This hotel makes a great location for weddings, reunions, anniversaries, and business meeting.

For more information, contact: The National Hotel
